As the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon restricted social and economic activities, low-income families have even become more vulnerable, as they struggle to meet their daily basic needs.
This time, Pilipinas in Action turned to one marginalized community that is close to Senator Pia Cayetano’s heart - the Daang Hari Kids in Bacoor City, Cavite.
Senator Pia Cayetano and the Daang Hari Kids go back a long way. Ten years ago, while doing her bike training along Daang Hari road, she encountered a group of children doing running drills by the roadside, with some wearing just rubber slippers and others running barefoot.
At that moment, Senator Pia knew that the kids deserved to be beneficiaries of Gabriel's Symphony Foundation, an organization she founded in memory of her son Gabriel who died in 2001 from a rare chromosomal disorder. With the help of sponsors and partners, the kids were given brand new pairs of running shoes. They were trained by running coaches, and given the opportunity to join fun runs and other learning activities.
On April 8, our team delivered food packs to the 21 families of these Daang Hari Kids residing in two small communities in the vicinity of Daang Hari Road. Consisting of daily staples like canned goods, milk, and coffee, the food packs were received by the kids on behalf of their families.
In the coming days and weeks, we hope to reach out to more underserved communities, families, and children like the Daang Hari Kids.
